Ever-Increasing Treatment Options
Cancer care is continually evolving as new treatments are researched and developed. As a result, treatment plans require multiple disciplines to provide precise diagnoses and appropriate therapies for cancer patients. Specialists focus their expertise on specific types of cancers and the multidisciplinary approach provides coordinated care for patients. Your physician will work with you and other members of the care team to develop a plan tailored to your needs. Depending on your diagnosis, treatment options may include systemic therapy such as chemotherapy, immune therapy, targeted small molecules or hormonal therapy. It may also include localized treatment such as surgical resection and/or radiation therapy. Promising investigational approaches may be recommended if appropriate. To ensure you receive the best course of treatment, oncology specialists conduct weekly conferences to review patients’ status, gaining insight, ideas and recommendations from a diverse team of professionals. If appropriate, your physician will work with experts in acupuncture, naturopathy and other complementary therapies to augment your care.

Advanced Technology for Timely Diagnoses

Continuing improvements in imaging technology are leading to earlier, more accurate diagnoses–a critical component in effective cancer treatment. Overlake consistently invests in leading-edge diagnostics to detect cancer at its earliest possible stage. Imaging techniques include PET/CT scan, CT scan, MRI and nuclear imaging including bone scan. For breast imaging, Overlake offers digital mammography and ultrasound, and the region’s first dedicated breast MRI is located on our campus.

Designated Oncology Unit

For patients who need hospitalization, the Cancer Center at Overlake has a designated inpatient oncology unit offering a relaxed, comfortable, home-like environment. The unit is staffed by specially trained oncology nurses who are experienced in treating the special needs of cancer patients.

The waiting room in the Lang Oncology Unit (pictured at right) was recently transformed into a peaceful retreat for patients and their families. This room can be used by patients as a quiet space away from patient rooms to relax, reflect or consult privately with physicians.

Collaborative Patient Care Teams

Working together to provide comprehensive care and treatment for each patient, the integrated care team includes board-certified medical, surgical and radiation oncologists. Additional specialists include dedicated breast surgeons and breast radiologists, pathologists, general radiologists, pulmonologists, gastroenterologists, urologists and surgeons. Since cancer care involves more than physicians and nurses, patients may receive support from other healthcare professionals, including:

  • Social workers and patient navigators
  • Nutritionists
  • Rehabilitation staff, including specialists in lymphedema
  • Clinical trials nurse
  • Pastoral care
